Carlos R. Gil del Alcazar, a postdoctoral fellow in the Polyak Lab, was awarded a research grant by the Claudia Adams Barr Program in Cancer Research. Carlos' project aims to elucidate immune-related strategies to prevent initiation and progression of breast cancer. This is based on previous work by the lab that shows that as breast cancer progresses from normal breast tissue, to pre-invasive, to invasive, and to metastatic disease the tumor microenvironment becomes more immunosuppressive and the immune response more muted
Tumor cells (red) and leukocytes (green) are stained by immunofluorescence.
